Race for Change Triathlete – Darien Edwards

DARIENEDWARDS
Occupation: Triathlon Ambassador

My name is Darien Edwards, I am a Marine Corps Veteran from Washington D.C. I am an extremely passionate individual and I love to inspire people to chase after what sets their souls on fire. I work as a Financial Analyst for Aeyon and spend my time outside of work training for triathlons, building full stack web applications as a freelancer, and hanging with friends. When I have time I like to volunteer at local races, Black Kids Swim events, and tech events.I am so excited to be doing this partnership with Ironman Foundation and Black Kids Swim.

Don’t let someone else's opinion of you become your reality.

The goal behind the Race For Change relay teams is to foster support for The IRONMAN Foundation’s diversity initiative and inspire more diverse athletes to consider IRONMAN events.
Who is DARIEN EDWARDS?!?Q&A
What non-athlete would you most like to train with and why?

Interesting question! I think every human is an athlete. But for people who don’t do it as a career I would say Eric Thomas because i’m sure he would be motivating me the entire workout! haha.

What celebrity would you most like to compete against why?

Naomi Osaka! I can’t play tennis but maybe she’ll do one of the Triathlon Sports against me!

What's the last thing you've been watching on TV?

Occasionally watching Netflix, mostly Naruto lately. Reliving my childhood.

Ironman, Captain America or Black Panther? Why?

Ironman easily. Give me a crowd, let me be the star, give me the pressure. I wanna be the man you’re watching on race day.

What food do you most wish was healthy but it’s not?

I eat McDonald’s and pizza more than I should.

What do you hope to get out of this experience?

This is my way of giving back to the sport of triathlon. I never know how long good times are going to last, so if i can do something special that helps people like it’s helped me, that’s all I could ask for.

What do you hope others will get out of your experience?

I don’t want people to look far and wide to find someone that looks like them doing something they want to try at a higher level. When i first looked into triathlon, i only knew of one black person that did the sport which was David Goggins.

What advice would you give to Black people who want to participate in races like this but don’t know where to begin?

We live in a fantastic world where we don’t need to know people in person anymore to learn from. Use your social channels to reach out to people doing the things you want to do. If you message ten regular people asking for assistance or guidances, you’re going to at least get some responses. Triathletes and endurance athletes love talking about the sports they’re in. We love when someone new is trying to enter the sport. Be ready to learn a lot and do what that person says.
