Summer Swim Team Scholarship Program
Combating underrepresentation and lack of opportunities for Black children in competitive swimming.

The Summer Swim Team Scholarship Program addresses critical concerns such as limited access to quality swimming facilities, the high costs associated with competitive swim programs, and a scarcity of resources that could benefit Black swimmers.

Program Scope, Goals and Deliverables

Scope: The program focuses on identifying financially disadvantaged Black children who demonstrate a passion and talent for swimming but are hindered by the lack of resources.

Goals:

  • To provide a limited number of $200 scholarships to offset the cost of joining summer swim teams for eligible Black children. *Most summer swim teams charge between $200-$300 per swimmer per summer*
  • To encourage more children to participate in and benefit from summer swim teams, thereby improving their swimming skills, discipline, and teamwork.
  • To increase Black representation in competitive swimming and foster a generation of proficient swimmers.
  • To collaborate with swim teams and community partners to promote inclusivity and diversity in swimming to cultivate a wider range of talent.
  • To measure the progress and impact of the program by tracking participants’ improvements, achievements, and long-term commitment to swimming.

Deliverables:

  • Financial scholarships that cover enrollment in summer swim team programs.
  • Guidance and support in accessing suitable swimming facilities and programs.
  • Provision of additional resources and mentoring to ensure participants can fully benefit from their swimming education and training.
Program Mission and Vision

Our Mission: To create equitable opportunities for Black children in competitive swimming by providing financial assistance that enables participation in summer swim team programs.

Our Vision: A swimming landscape where Black children are adequately represented, supported, and celebrated at competitive levels, leading to a generational shift in the participation and success rates of Black swimmers.

Why the Summer Swim Team Scholarship Program?

The landscape of competitive swimming reveals significant disparities in representation and accessibility for Black children. These disparities are driven by economic, social, and infrastructural inequalities that BKS’s Summer Swim Team Scholarship Program seeks to address.

By recognizing and tackling the intertwined challenges of access, affordability, and targeted support, the project is positioned as a crucial step towards inclusivity in swimming.
