Black Kids Swim Celebrates its 2nd Anniversary with its “Making Swimming Cool” Campaign

Black Kids Swim Celebrates its 2nd Anniversary by Making Swimming Cool!

Competitive Swimmers Making Swimming Cool

Black Kids Swim is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of African American competitive swimmers by making the sport exciting and inviting for Black children.  For two years we have worked to serve you – the Black Swim community.  We are smashing negative stereotypes, combating a legacy of fear and exclusion, promoting African American role models, and opening doors of access to swim training.  We are making swimming cool for Black children.

Through our website and social media we applaud successful swimmers, encourage beginners, and answer questions from swim parents struggling to support their young swimmers.

To celebrate our second birthday, we’ve created just for you, our BKS Community, the #LoveThisSport campaign.”Training Day”, the first of our ‘making swimming cool’ three part series, celebrates the strength of our swimmers in order to inspire more of our children to LOVE to swim! Black Kids Swim applauds successful swimmers, encourages beginners and supports swim parents.

We need your support. We ask that you share the #LoveThisSport video widely, join our email list, and make a tax-deductible donation to Black Kids Swim so that we can continue to provide the advocacy our community needs.

Khaleb Byrd competitive in all strokes is Making Swimming CoolCompetitive swimming is not a diverse sport. USA Swimming, the nation’s organizing body for the sport has more than 337,000 members – of whom only 1.3 percent are Black.  While USA Swimming and anti-drowning organizations provide free and low-cost short-term water safety instruction, there are limited resources for youth who LOVE the water to transition from basic water safety skills to competitive proficiency. Youth who participate on a competitive swim team become proficient in the 4 strokes and receive training that will prepare them for summer jobs as lifeguards and, possibly, a range of careers in the aquatics field.

When African American youth lack basic swim skills they are excluded from a variety of opportunities.  Sixty four percent of African Americans have no or low swimming ability, putting them at risk for drowning.  Sixty five percent of African-American children would like to swim more than they do, and 76 percent of parents reported that their children would be more likely to want to participate in swimming if they saw a talented swimmer that looked like them.

The #LoveThisSport “Making Swimming Cool” campaign, our gift to you on our second anniversary, is part of our continual effort to inspire more Black competitive swimmers!
